Piccini - Chianti Riserva - 2019

Piccini have been making wines since 1882 based in Castellina in the Chianti region of Tuscany in Italy. The production area of Chianti was first defined by the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Cosimo III.

The wine is classified as DOCG (Denominazione di origine controllata e garantita) today which is Italian government mandated and is only given to those wines of the greatest quality - a step higher than DOC (Denominazione di origine controllata).

Piccini’s Chianti Riserva is made with Sangiovese, Colorino, and Canaiolo grapes. Colorino grapes are not typical with other grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, or Syrah often used instead.

On the nose a surprising yet pleasant sweet meatiness - what can only be described as peppered German salami - paired with strawberry jam on initial pour. With time opening up to sharpness of licorice and deepening of strawberry into a rounded cherry. On the palate, medium body with well balanced mouthfeel neither dry nor acidic. Makes for smooth drinking with lovely flavours of dark fruit and a subtle oak sweetness to the finish lingering in the mouth.
