FlameThrowing Sauce

*Note, slight adaptation of the name replacing “er” with “ing” so as not to face some sort of cease and desist, since Dairy Queen seem to have copyright over the official name.

So this is an interesting start to the topic of Copycat to say the least. It’s a sauce used on a sole burger produced by a US Midwest burger fast food chain called Dairy Queen. Sauce though can make or break many a dish in this case making an otherwise simple burger a wonderful, cost-effective treat.

This burger was a staple of mine whilst I studied in the US for a year. A staple because of a 50% discount on a Monday (maybe Tuesday) off the whole menu for the local university students. A wonderful sauce that had the perfect amount of heat and acid to cut through the sizable burgers and generous helping of cheesy, bacony, fatty goodness.

FlameThrower Stackburger looking divine.

It’s interesting furthermore that bar the discount, the visiting of a fast food outlet late at night to eat (out of seeming boredom) could be said to be integral to Millennial and Gen Z culture. I found myself doing it both in the US and the UK with friends growing up and I believe it still happens today particularly in the Anglosphere. Consumer capitalism at its best!

The sauce is in reality quite simplistic, a chipotle mayo with added kick. Although created for their own delicious beef burger, it goes well with fries as well, but would likely work well on a fried chicken burger too.

ingredients

3/4 cups Mayo - to start, adjust as needed (preferably Kewpie for added umami)

1 Tbsp of Chipotle hot sauce (Cholula or Yucateco worked well)

1 Tbsp ground Jalapeño

1/2 Tbsp Cayenne powder

1/2 Tbsp Garlic granules

1/2 Tbsp of distilled vinegar

1/2 tsp of smoked paprika

Few drops of liquid seasoning (i.e. Maggi or Winiary)

Salt, to taste (optional)

method

Combine in a bowl and serve on burgers or as a side condiment. Adjust seasoning and mayo to taste.
